Hasan Minhaj is currently a Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show (Comedy Central). He joined in 2014, while John Stewart was still hosting the show. Hasan has swiftly risen to fame by his wit and comedic political commentary.
Son of Indian immigrants, he is a first generation American and sheds light on his experience growing up in California on his first stand up comedy special Homecoming King, which was filmed in Davis, California. His special coupled beautiful story telling with hilarious jokes and though provoking reflections.
Hasan utilizes his voice beyond his comedic commentary on The Daily Show and also advocates for immigrant families and Muslim Americans all arounds the country. In 2017, he was chosen to headline the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C., where he took on the traditional role of roasting national politics, current events, the current president, the Washington press corps, and the American media. He ended his speech reminding the press to do their job:
"We are here to talk about the truth. It is 2017, and we are living in the golden age of lying. Now's the time to be a liar, and Donald Trump is liar in chief. And remember, you guys are his biggest enemy no. 1. You are his biggest enemy. Journalists, ISIS, normal length ties. And somehow, you're the bad guys. That's why you gotta keep your foot on the gas."
Hasan is an example of millennials utilizing their voices to tell their own stories, so that society and politicians won't be able to lie about their experiences. The American Dream is one that is pretty dismal these days, but Hasan is a true representation of that, as he reaches back and helps others achieve it.
